Eduard Bohlen shipwreck, Namibia

Windhoek, Namibia (outside of Windhoek)

Eduard Bohlen shipwreck, Namibia

The Eduard Bohlen was a ship that ran aground off the coast of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast on September 5, 1909, in a thick fog. Currently the wreck lies in the sand a distance from the shoreline.

The ship was a 2,272 gross ton cargo ship with a length of 310 feet. In September 1909, it ran aground in thick fog and wrecked at Conception Bay while on a voyage from Swakopmund to Table Bay. This wreck is said to personify the loneliness of Namibia’s coast best. Its remains lie rusting in the sand, partially buried.

Normandie Day 3 - Seaside Towns

After a picnic breakfast of Camembert and baguettes just outside of Caen, we headed to the coast. There are several towns right along the English channel, many of them quite touristy but still very charming.

We stopped first to walk around a bit in Cabourg, before heading on through several other towns to Deauville, often referred to as the 21st arrondissement of Paris, because so many Parisians spend their weekends there.

The beach in Cabourg:

Fancy shops in Deauville:

As we live in Paris, we didn’t really prioritize checking out its “21st” arrondissement, but we headed to the beach. It wasn’t nice enough to lay out - many people had scarves and jackets on - and of course not to swim, but the sand was very soft for standing around and collecting shells. There’s also lots of people-watching to be done, as the boardwalk Promenade des Planches is lined with upscale restaurants and the beach cabins named after movie stars that can be rented for the day.

The beach cabins:

The colorful beach umbrellas (I liked them!):

Hanging out:

My shells:

But no picnics on the beach? Come on!

We also intended to stop in Trouville, the less-chic sister city of Deauville, but it was absolutely packed with people, so we kept driving on to the adorable Honfleur.
