Box Office: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Sets Box Office Record

The latest installment of the Harry Potter franchise The Half-Blood Prince has set a new opening day record chalking in $100 million globally in its first 24 hours - $58.2 million domestically and $45.9 million internationally for a total tally of $104 million - the best start ever for the franchise. This comes the already $22 million the pic made in its midnight runs the most ever for a latenight release.

Domestically, opening-day numbers suggest “Half-Blood Prince” is on course to at least match the $139.7 million five-day opening of the last film, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

“Order of the Phoenix,” debuting on the same Wednesday in July 2007, grossed $44 million, well below the $58.2 million earned by “Half-Blood Prince.

Many forget that the film was supposed to open back in November of 2008 and the studios decided a summer move would prove to be a more commercially viable decision. I guess they were right. Some fans were pissed by this but all has been forgotten probablt due to anticipation and love for the series, its arrival wipes away those negative thoughts.

We will be following the BO tally for the 5-day take but I can assure you it will probably beat Transformers 2 and may even beat the Dark Knight’s 5 day record.

Check out the graphic below that shows just how record friendly the latest installment is as well as the franchise in general.
